Qantas has cancelled all its flights in and out of Melbourne, Australia, because of ash drifting over the Pacific Ocean from a volcano in Chile.

Qantas had already cancelled flights to and from Tasmania and parts of New Zealand. Other airlines have also grounded flights in the region, stranding thousands of travellers.

Australian airline Qantas said it was too dangerous to fly through the ash.

The Puyehue-Cordon-Caulle volcano has been erupting for more than a week.

Strong winds have carried the fine particles of ash from the volcano to southern New Zealand and Australia at between 6,000 and 10,600m (20,000 and 35,000ft). Coach Leather Handbags

The particles have the potential to seriously damage jet engines.

Qantas said all its flights to and from Melbourne and Auckland, New Zealand, were being grounded from Sunday evening local time.

All its flights in and out of Tasmania and the New Zealand cities of Christchurch, Queenstown and Wellington have already been cancelled.

Qantas said about 8,000 passengers would be affected by its cancellations.Nike Dunk High
Virgin Australia said it was cancelling 34 domestic flights and one international flight from Melbourne on Sunday.

Budget carrier Jetstar has also cancelled flights within New Zealand and flights from New Zealand to Australia and from Tasmania to the rest of Australia.

Passengers at Tasmania’s Hobart airport told ABC news they might be stuck on the island for several days. Ferries from Tasmania to Australia’s mainland are booked up for at least two days.

Air New Zealand said it had not cancelled any flights, but was adjusting flight paths to steer aircraft below the ash.

New Zealand’s Civil Aviation Authority warned that the ash was expected to be detected at the cruising level of aircraft but had not yet been seen below 20,000ft.

“Given that the volcanic activity is continuing, it is expected that New Zealand airspace may be affected by these plumes for at least a week,” it said in a statement.

The volcano has already caused severe disruption to flights in South America, with planes grounded for several days in Chile, Argentina, Uruguay and Brazil

It is the first serious eruption of the volcano chain since 1960, when the area was hit by a massive earthquake.

Thousands of people are living in temporary shelters after being evacuated from the area around the volcano.

Kenyan police: Campaign to purge corrupt officers

Filed under: Allgemein — haha3888 at 4:05 am on Tuesday, June 7, 2011

Kenya has started screening more than 1,600 senior police officers in an effort to weed out corruption.

Anti-corruption commission director Patrick Lumumba told the BBC a committee would check whether the officers had faced corruption allegations.

It would also order the policemen to undergo psychometric and physical fitness tests.

Kenyan police are often ranked as the most corrupt in East Africa.

In 2005, a recruitment drive for new police officers was cancelled after 80% of applications were found to have paid bribes or used their connections to get a job.

The BBC’s Anne Waithera in Nairobi says the exercise is the first of its kind in Kenya and is intended to restore public confidence in the police force.

All officers above the rank of superintendent will be screened.

“One of the things we will determine is whether a particular officer has a case or cases that may undermine his ability to serve with integrity,” Mr Lumumba told the BBC’s Focus

on Africa programme.

But Kenya’s Central Organisation of Trade Unions (Cotu) said it wanted the process to be suspended because it was not represented on the vetting committee, according to the

Daily Nation newspaper. Nike outlet

“If this is not done, the exercise is likely to be perceived to have been conducted by the government with a view to get rid of certain officers within the police force,” the

union’s Secretary-General Francis Atwoli said.

The committee has started the exercise in north and western Kenya.

It is due to extend the campaign to Nairobi next week.

Japan nuclear: UN says tsunami risk was underestimated

Filed under: Allgemein — haha3888 at 4:15 am on Thursday, June 2, 2011

Japan underestimated the risk of a tsunami hitting a nuclear power plant, the UN nuclear energy agency has said.
Women Nike Dunk Low

However, the response to the nuclear crisis that followed the 11 March quake and tsunami was “exemplary”, it said.

The Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, which was badly damaged by the tsunami, is still leaking radiation.

Japan’s Prime Minister Naoto Kan is facing a no-confidence vote submitted by three opposition parties over his handling of the crisis.

They say he lacks the ability to lead rebuilding efforts and to end the crisis at the Fukushima plant, public broadcaster NHK reported.
Nike outlet

Some politicians from Mr Kan’s governing Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ), including former Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama, are backing the motion.

If it is passed in a vote expected on Thursday, Mr Kan would be forced to resign or call a snap election.
Independent regulators

The IAEA inspectors spent a week in Japan compiling their report on the Fukushima nuclear crisis, and have handed a summary to the Japanese government.

The full report, intended to improve nuclear safety around the world, will be submitted at an inter-governmental meeting in Vienna later this month.
Kids Dunk High

The UN team was led by Britain’s top nuclear safety official Mike Weightman and included experts from France, Russia, China and the United States.

The inspectors pointed out a key failure, already admitted by Japan, to plan for the risk of waves crashing over the sea wall and knocking out the plant’s back-up generators.

Even though a major faultline lies just offshore, the sea wall at Fukushima was less than 6m (20ft) high. The height of the tsunami wave was about 14m.

“The tsunami hazard for several sites was underestimated,” the UN team’s three-page preliminary report said.
Nike Dunk High

“Nuclear plant designers and operators should appropriately evaluate and provide protection against the risks of all natural hazards.”

Amid concerns about safety, just 17 of the country’s 54 reactors are operating.

The IAEA said continued monitoring of the health and safety of the nuclear workers and the general public was necessary.

The report also emphasised the importance of independent regulators in the nuclear industry.

In Japan, the Nuclear Safety Agency is part of the industry ministry, which promotes nuclear power.
Kids Dunk Low

“The planned road map for recovery of the stricken reactors is important and acknowledged. It will need modification as new circumstances are uncovered and may be assisted by

international co-operation,” the IAEA report said.

Goshi Hosono, an aide to Prime Minister Kan, accepted the report and said the government would need to review its nuclear regulatory framework.

The government invited the IAEA to Japan to demonstrate that lessons are being learned from what happened at Fukushima, says the BBC’s Roland Buerk in Tokyo.

Nike Dunk Low The powerful earthquake and the tsunami it generated are now known to have killed more than 15,280

people, while nearly 8,500 remain unaccounted for.

South Africa Uganda envoy Qwelane guilty of hate speech

Filed under: Allgemein — haha3888 at 4:03 am on Wednesday, June 1, 2011

The South African ambassador to Uganda, a former columnist for South Africa’s Sunday Sun paper, has been found guilty of hate speech for an anti-gay article.
Coach Jewelrys

South Africa’s Equality Court fined Jon Qwelane $14,450 (£8,920) and ordered him to apologise for promoting hatred in the column published in 2008.

Headlined “Call me names but gay is NOT OKAY”, it caused an uproar at the time.

Mr Qwelane, who was appointed last year to Uganda where homosexual acts are illegal, did not mount a defence.

Correspondents say the outcome of the case is particularly significant in the light of the recent attacks and rapes of lesbian women in South Africa.

Unlike in many African countries, homosexual acts are legal in South Africa and discrimination based on sexual orientation is banned, but activists say gay and lesbian people

are often attacked in townships. nike dunk shoes

“We are hoping really that this finding will send a message to community members, a message that says gay and lesbian people have an equal right to the protection of their

dignity,” said Vincent Moaga, spokesman for the South African Human Rights Commission, which initiated the complaint against Mr Qwelane.

The Sunday Sun officially apologised for the column following complaints after its publication, but Mr Qwelane refused to make an apology.

The court agreed with commission’s argument that Mr Qwelane’s article, and the cartoon accompanying it, had promoted hatred against homosexuals, causing them emotional

suffering.

Mr Moaga said the money from the fine would be donated to gay rights organisations. coach outlet

The BBC’s Pumza Fihlani in Johannesburg says Mr Qwelane was appointed as ambassador last year, raising concerns that he would fuel tensions in Uganda which has come under

intense international pressure over plans to tighten laws against homosexuality.

The Anti-Homosexuality Bill, first introduced in 2009 and yet to be voted on in Uganda’s parliament, seeks to increase the penalties for homosexual acts from 14 years in prison

to life.

It also proposes the death penalty for a new offence of “aggravated homosexuality” – defined as when one of the participants is a minor, HIV-positive, disabled or a “serial

offender”.

Libya: South Africa’s Jacob Zuma in peace mission

Filed under: Allgemein — haha3888 at 5:09 am on Monday, May 30, 2011

South African President Jacob Zuma is heading for Libya for what is being seen as a last attempt to find a peaceful solution to the conflict.
Coach Kristin Handbags

It is unclear if the visit, Mr Zuma’s second, will focus on exit strategies for leader Col Muammar Gaddafi.

Rebels fighting Col Gaddafi’s forces since February have refused to negotiate unless he steps down.

Meanwhile Mr Zuma’s ruling African National Congress has condemned the Nato bombing of Libya.

“We… join the continent and all peace loving people of the world in condemning the continuing aerial bombardments of Libya by Western forces,” the ANC said in a statement on

the eve of the visit. Nike Dunk Low

Nato imposed a no-fly zone in Libya in March as Col Gaddafi’s forces threatened to overrun rebel-held parts of the country.

International pressure on Col Gaddafi continues to grow, with the G8 calling for his departure on Friday and Russia’s President Dmitry Medvedev saying on Saturday that he no

longer had the right to lead Libya.

The rebels welcomed the G8 statement.

“The entire world has reached a consensus that Col Gaddafi and his regime have not only lost their legitimacy but also their credibility,” said rebel leader Mustafa Abdul Jalil

in a statement. coach outlet

Mr Zuma’s Monday visit was part of efforts by the African Union to persuade Libya to adopt political reforms needed to end the crisis, said his spokesman Zizi Kodwa.

But one source at his office, who refused to be named, told AFP news agency the purpose of the visit was to discuss an exit strategy for Col Gaddafi.

Mr Zuma’s visit comes days after the UK and France announced they were sending attack helicopters to join the Nato effort, as the alliance attempts to break the deadlock which

has left the rebels in control of eastern Libya and the government running most of the west.

The UK has also said it could use “bunker busting” bombs, capable of penetrating reinforced buildings, in a matter of hours in Libya.

“We are not trying to physically target individuals in Gaddafi’s inner circle on whom he relies but we are certainly sending them increasingly loud messages,” said Defence

Secretary Liam Fox.

UN Security Council Resolution 1973 authorised air strikes to protect Libyan civilians from attacks by forces loyal to Col Gaddafi.

Coach Poppy Handbags The UN vote followed the violent suppression of protests against Col Gaddafi’s

regime, and military strikes against his forces in support of the rebels, which began on 19 March.

Captured Mladic in Serbian court

Filed under: Allgemein — haha3888 at 4:10 am on Friday, May 27, 2011

Ratko Mladic has appeared in a Serbian court hours after being arrested following 16 years on the run. coach outlet

Authorities want to extradite the former Bosnian Serb army chief to the war crimes tribunal in The Hague.

He faces accusations including a genocide charge over the killing of about 7,500 Bosnian Muslim men and boys at Srebrenica in 1995.

The hearing was halted pending a medical examination, his lawyers said. Court officials believe he will appeal.

The whole process is expected to take a week.

Following the arrest of Radovan Karadzic in 2008, Gen Mladic became the most prominent Bosnian war crimes suspect at large. Nike outlet

Serbia had been under intense international pressure to arrest him and send him to the UN International Criminal Tribunal to the former Yugoslavia in The Hague.

Serbian TV showed footage of Gen Mladic wearing a baseball cap and walking slowly as he appeared in court in Belgrade.

His lawyer, Milos Saljic, told reporters the judge had attempted to question Gen Mladic but the suspect was in a “difficult psychological and physical condition”, and was unable

to communicate.

The hearing is expected to be resumed on Friday, reports say. coach factory outlet

Gen Mladic asserts that he does not recognise the authority of the UN war-crimes tribunal, Mr Saljic added.

The BBC’s Mark Lowen in Belgrade says the Serbian government will be keen for Gen Mladic to be extradited quickly, hoping that his departure might prevent further protests by

Serb nationalists who still see him as a defender of the Serbian people.

President Boris Tadic said Gen Mladic’s arrest on Thursday had brought Serbia and the region closer to reconciliation, and opened the doors to European Union membership.

Mr Tadic rejected criticism that Serbia had been reluctant to seize Gen Mladic.

“We have been co-operating with the Hague tribunal fully from the beginning of the mandate of this government,” he said. Nike sb shoes

A spokeswoman for families of Srebrenica victims, Hajra Catic, told AFP news agency: “After 16 years of waiting, for us, the victims’ families, this is a relief.”
‘Village stake-out’

Gen Mladic, 69, was seized in the province of Vojvodina in the early hours of Thursday, Serbian Justice Minister Slobodan Homan told the BBC.

Serbian security sources told AFP news agency that three special units had descended on a house in the village of Lazarevo, about 80km (50 miles) north of Belgrade.

The house was owned by a relative of Gen Mladic and had been under surveillance for the past two weeks, one of the sources added.

Reports that Gen Mladic had been living under the assumed name Milorad Komodic were denied by Serbian Interior Minister Ivica Dacic.

“It is not true that he used another identity, or that he possessed a document with someone else’s name,” said Mr Dacic

Serbian media say he did not resist arrest, and was not in disguise – unlike Mr Karadzic, who had a long beard and a ponytail when he was captured in Belgrade three years ago.

Gen Mladic was indicted by the UN war crimes tribunal in The Hague in 1995 for genocide over the killings that July at Srebrenica – the worst single atrocity in Europe since

World War II – and other alleged crimes. Nike Dunk High

Having lived freely in the Serbian capital, Belgrade, he disappeared after the arrest of former Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic in 2001.

In a message from his UN cell in the Hague, Mr Karadzic said he was sorry Gen Mladic has been arrested.

The wartime Bosnian Serb leader added that he wanted to work with him “to bring out the truth” about the Bosnian war, in a message relayed to the Associated Press news agency by

his lawyer.

The arrest was hailed internationally.

RE teacher Gary Smith’s Muslim attackers jailed

Filed under: Allgemein — haha3888 at 4:02 am on Friday, May 27, 2011

Four Muslim men who assaulted a religious education teacher because they did not approve of him teaching Muslim girls have been jailed.

Gary Smith, 38, was beaten as he walked to Central Foundation Girls’ School in Bow, east London, last July.

The gang left him unconscious after attacking him with a metal rod and a brick, Snaresbrook Crown Court heard.

They pleaded guilty to GBH with intent and were given indeterminate jail terms with a minimum of five years.

Simon Alam, 19, of Whitechapel, Azad Hussain, 26, of Wapping, Sheikh Rashid, 27, of Shadwell, and Akmol Hussein, 26, of Bethnal Green, all in east London, were jailed on

Thursday. coach outlet
Judge John Hand QC said he believed the four remained a danger to the public because of their extreme religious beliefs.

Addressing the defendants one by one, he said: “Your belief is that you carried out a duty to your God and you did so with no mercy.

“If you think that people around you in society present an insult or threat to God then you will not hesitate in attacking again in the way that you have acted.”
‘Mocking us’

The court heard Mr Smith suffered multiple injuries, has a permanent 4.7in (12cm) long deep scar across his left cheek, and the whole of the facial part of his skull was broken.

The court heard how the men were only caught because Hussein’s car was being bugged on an unrelated matter.

Hussein, who had a niece at the school, was heard to say: “He’s mocking us and he’s putting thoughts in people’s minds.

“How can somebody take a job to teach Islam when he’s not even a Muslim himself?”

Hussein was also recorded as saying he did not care if he had to go to prison over the attack as he was doing it for the sake of Allah.

Prosecutor Sarah Whitehouse said Mr Smith had been head of religious studies at the school for eight years and was “by all accounts an able, enthusiastic and popular teacher”

The court heard he cannot remember the attack and has problems with his memory and sufferers from depression and anxiety – all of which now affect his ability to teach.

clothes.

Brazil eases rules on conserving Amazon rainforest

Filed under: Allgemein — haha3888 at 5:42 am on Thursday, May 26, 2011

Brazil’s Chamber of Deputies has voted to ease restrictions on the amount of land farmers must preserve as forest.
Coach Heels&Sandals

The amended law also grants some amnesties for previous deforestation.

Supporters say Brazil needs land to boost agricultural production, while environmentalists say destruction of the Amazon rainforest will increase.

Wrangling over the final bill is likely, as Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff indicated she would veto any bill that contained an amnesty.

After months of at times acrimonious debate, the Chamber of Deputies voted to overhaul the Forest Code, as the legislation is known.
Cheap Women Nike Dunk SB High

Under the current law, 80% of a farm in the Amazon must remain forested; in other areas, the requirement is lower, falling to 20%.

However, in practice, the legislation has not been widely enforced. It is estimated that 20% of the Amazon, the world’s biggest rainforest, has been cleared, mainly as a result

of logging and farming.

Under the new bill, small-scale landowners, who make up the majority of Brazil’s farmers, will be exempt from having to replant deforested land.

Coach Boots
One of the most controversial elements grants farmers with land of up to 400 hectares (990 acres) an amnesty if they illegally cut down forest before July 2008.

The legislation must now go to the Senate and then to President Rousseff.

Her spokesman said she would veto any legislation that included the amnesty.

The changes were proposed by Aldo Rebelo form Brazil’s Communist Party (PCdoB), who argued that the existing rules prevented small farmers from making best use of their land to

lift themselves out of poverty.

Farmers’ groups backed the changes, saying Brazil, as one of the biggest exporters of soy, beef and sugar, needed to boost food production in times of high commodity prices.
Cheap Women Nike Dunk SB Low

“None of the world’s large farm producers that compete with Brazil – the United States, Europe, China, Argentina and Australia – obliges its producers to preserve any forest,”

the National Agriculture Confederation (CNA) said.
Amazon dream

Philip Fearnside of the National Institute of Amazon Research said the amnesty would “legalise the illegal”.

“People believe they can deforest illegally because sooner or later all will be forgiven,” he told the Associated Press.
Coach Belts

But CNA Vice President Assuero Veronez said the changes would not increase deforestation.

“We do not have to cut down one single tree. We can increase agricultural output in already deforested areas,” he told AP.

In the 1960s and 1970s, Brazil’s then military government encouraged people to settle in the Amazon as a way of boosting economic development.

Over the past decade, authorities stepped up monitoring and the enforcement of laws, leading to a significant drop in the rate of clearance.
Cheap Women Nike Dunk High

However, last week satellite images showed that deforestation had increased nearly sixfold in March and April compared with the same period last year.

Much of the destruction has been in Mato Grosso state, the centre of soya farming in Brazil.

Rapture: Harold Camping issues new apocalypse date

Filed under: Allgemein — haha3888 at 5:57 am on Wednesday, May 25, 2011

The evangelical broadcaster who left followers crestfallen by his failed prediction that last Saturday would be Judgement Day says he miscalculated.

Harold Camping said it had “dawned” on him that God would spare humanity “hell on Earth for five months” and the apocalypse would happen on 21 October.

Mr Camping said he felt “terrible” about his mistake.

But he said he could not give financial advice to those who spent their life savings in the belief the end was nigh.

Mr Camping had predicted that on 21 May, true believers would be swept up to heaven while a giant earthquake would bring destruction for those left behind.

His independent ministry, Family Radio International, spent millions of dollars on broadcasts, billboards and campaign vehicles to publicise the prediction.

Some followers donated their life savings or simply gave away their worldly possessions as the day approached.

Many expressed bewilderment and shock as the day came and went with no sign of the global cataclysm.

“I’ve been mocked and scoffed and cursed at,” said Jeff Hopkins, a retired TV producer in New York state who spent some of his savings customising his car to showcase Mr

Camping’s warning. Coach Boots

“It’s like getting slapped in the face.”
‘Not accurate’

Mr Camping had not been seen since Saturday until he appeared on a show on his Open Forum radio show, broadcast from Oakland, California, on Monday to give a 90-minute sometimes

rambling presentation that included a question-and-answer session with reporters.

He said that when his prediction had failed to materialise he felt so terrible that he took refuge in a motel with his wife.
Cheap Nike Dunk High

He said sorry for not having the dates “worked out as accurately as I could have”.

Over the weekend, he said, he had returned to the scripture and it had “dawned” on him that a “merciful and compassionate God” would spare humanity by compressing the

apocalyptic destruction into a shorter time frame.

But he insisted 21 October had always been the end-point of his own chronology – or at least his own latest chronology, as a previous prophecy that the apocalypse would strike

in 1994 also failed to come to pass. coach factory outlet

Asked if he had any advice to offer those who had given away their material wealth in the belief the world was about to end, Mr Camping said they would cope.

“We just had a great recession. There’s lots of people who lost their jobs, lots of people who lost their houses… and somehow they all survived,” he said.

“We’re not in the business of giving any financial advice,” he added.

Libya unrest: UK and France to send helicopters – Paris

Filed under: Allgemein — haha3888 at 6:04 am on Tuesday, May 24, 2011

Britain and France are to deploy attack helicopters in Libya, French Defence Minister Gerard Longuet says.
Coach Bracelets

Mr Longuet said they would start as soon as possible. The UK has yet to confirm the deployment.

The move would increase pressure on Col Muammar Gaddafi’s forces, as helicopters can hit targets on the ground more accurately.

Nato jets have been targeting Col Gaddafi’s military infrastructure, but have been unable to stop the fighting.

Late on Monday, several massive explosions were heard in the capital, Tripoli, including close to Col Gaddafi’s Bab al-Aziziya compound.

In a separate development, the most senior US diplomat yet to visit the rebels in Libya is holding talks in their Benghazi stronghold.

US Assistant Secretary of State Jeffrey Feltman met the Transitional National Council, which rules the east of the country.

In a statement released during the visit, Washington reiterated that Col Gaddafi – who controls most of the western Libya and also the capital Tripoli – must leave power.

However, the Libyan rebels failed to gain full recognition when they travelled to the US a week ago.

On Monday, Mr Longuet confirmed earlier media reports that France was sending its attack helicopters to Libya.

Speaking on the sidelines of talks with European Union defence ministers in Brussels, Mr Longuet also said: “The British, who have assets similar to ours, will also commit.”

“The sooner the better is what the British think,” the French minister added.

Earlier, France’s Le Figaro newspaper said that 12 helicopters were despatched to Libya on the French carrier Tonnerre on 17 May. The helicopters involved were allegedly Tigre

and Gazelle. Women Nike Dunk Low

A spokesman for Britain’s ministry of defence said in a statement that “as with any military campaign, we are constantly reviewing our options alongside allies to enhance the

capabilities available to Nato”.

BBC defence correspondent Caroline Wyatt says using attack helicopters marks a significant escalation of the campaign.

She says the UK’s Apache attack helicopters would deploy from HMS Ocean, the Royal Navy’s largest warship. Our correspondent says the BBC understands their use was authorised by

the prime minister at a meeting of the National Security Council. Coach Earrings

Experts say these helicopters are able to identity targets quickly but they are more vulnerable than the strike aircraft.
